Patriots officially bring back Brian Hoyer on a 3-year deal

Brian Hoyer is officially a Patriot once again.

The veteran quarterback signed a three-year deal with the team moments ago and will back up Tom Brady.

Hoyer was the Pats' backup quarterback from 2009-2011 but never played any meaningful snaps. Since his time in New England, he's made stops in Cleveland, Houston, Arizona, Chicago and San Francisco. He was originally going to be sent back to the Patriots in the Jimmy Garoppolo trade, but the Patriots may have had to add some extra compensation to get him.

A three-year deal is interesting, but it lends to the idea of the Patriots drafting another quarterback to be Tom Brady's successor and let him take all the time he needs to be ready while having a veteran back up who knows New England's offensive system on the roster.
