Winners and losers of Patriots vs Saints
Winners
Jamie Collins: Jamie Collins started the game off with forcing a fumble that was eventually recovered by Cyrus Jones. On the next drive, Jamie Collins picked off Garrett Grayson and ran it back for a Pick 6. Jamie Collins provides an energy on the defense that will hopefully fill the void of Tom Brady for the first four weeks. Trey Flowers: Trey Flowers made his presence known in the first preseason game. In the fourth quarter he sacked Luke McCown for a loss of 18 yards, causing a fumble. Flowers recovered the fumble and took it 17 yards for the touchdown. Trey is coming off of injury from last year and hopes to continue to make big plays to help his defense.
James White: James White put up a fight for his roster spot with a 56 yard catch. White lost his balance towards the end of his run otherwise he could have been credited with the touchdown. In addition to his large catch, White rushed for 12 yards on 3 attempts. James White and Dion Lewis will be a huge help to Jimmy Garoppolo in the run and pass game.
Losers
Nate Solder: Nate Solder missed most of last season after injuring his bicep. In the first quarter he gave up two sacks, causing a slow start to the Patriots offense. Hopefully this is just Nate shaking off a little rust from last season and he can be a key part to our offensive line.
LeGarrette Blount: In the preseason opener, Blount had nine carries for 20 yards. His debut wasn't stellar and was overshadowed by other running backs such as Tyler Gaffney and James White. If Blount's play continues to be unproductive his roster spot may not be secure.
Malcolm Mitchell: Malcolm Mitchell was a standout in the first half tallying 55 yards on 4 catches. Unfortunately, just before the end of the first half Malcolm was injured. After a tremendous catch from Jimmy Garoppolo he turned to run but eventually landed on his elbow and bent it in ways elbows shouldn't be bent. It looked like his season was over but Jeff Howe is reporting that he dislocated it and should be back on the field within the next four weeks. So a sigh of relief can be had, but still unfortunate his debut got cut short.
Stay tuned for the next three weeks of preseason to see more winners and losers!
