Wes Welker and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day

After a botched special teams play last year in Gillette stadium that cost the Broncos the game in over time Wes Welker was probably hoping for a better performance. Not quite.
Welker came into the game with subpar numbers and I even wrote about his possible retirement last week.
Despite being targeted 8 times Welker had only 3 catches for 31 yards yesterday. His lowlight of the game came when Manning attempted to hit the former Patriot on a crossing route. Rather than securing the catch the ball was tipped into the air allowing for Browner to nab the ball.
Welker's woes continued in that same play when McCourty laid a big hit on Welker's lower back. The collision resulted in the former Patriot not returning to the game. Officiating expert Mike Pereira weighed in on the hit to the back and agreed with the no call due to the fact that McCourty did not hit him with the crown of his helmet.
The fact is Welker is 33 years old and has been taking huge hits from linebackers and safeties for years going over the middle of the field. Even if he bounces back from this latest injury retirement should be on his mind. When asked whether his old teammate and friend should retire Tom Brady stated:
What makes Wes so great is that he’s got the most mental toughness. And nobody works harder than him. Whatever he decides, what his personal decisions are, I cheer for him every week. He’s one of my best friends, outside of when we play him. I hate to see him go out of the game. He’s meant so much to our team and so much to me as a friendship and as a person that I always root for the best for him. I hope he’s doing okay.
