Darrelle Revis allowing receptions shouldn't be a cause for concern

The New England Patriots didn't play their best game in a 16-9 win on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders, and neither did Darrelle Revis, who gave up 5 catches on 6 targets for 63 yards, according to NESN.

Watching that game, at no point did I ever think Revis was having a bad game. A couple of the catches, he was playing well off his man to not allow a big play or a touchdown. Regardless, he's going to surrender more catches in some games than he will in others. I said in a previous post that there are unrealistic expectations surrounding him, and this is exactly what I was talking about.

Revis can obviously play better, there's no denying that. He's capable of completely shutting a receiver down, as we saw in week 2 against the Vikings. The only play he gave up on Sunday that I didn't like was a reception to James Jones, and then Jones picked up some yards after the catch. Besides that, it was clear Revis was playing conservatively, which was likely the game plan that day. He's the best cornerback in the league, but he should still be allowed to give up some receptions without being criticized.

The fact of the matter is that Revis and the Patriots defense didn't surrender a touchdown on Sunday. That doesn't happen very often, especially with the New England defense of the past. We should be ecstatic. There's no reason to be worried. I guess when you have a dominant defensive performance like the Patriots did, we can't help but get nit picky and point out any possible thing that can be ridiculed.
