Report: Brady Quinn works out for Patriots, Ryan Mallet trade on the way?

The Patriots backup quarterback situation is one of the hottest topics in training camp.

Fourth year man Ryan Mallet has been the subject of trade rumors seemingly ever since he was selected by the Patriots in the third round. He hasn't impressed much in his limited playing time, but still many believe that the once highly touted prospect could be on the move. Especially once the Pats drafted Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round this year.

So, with a confusing quarterback situation in New England already, Brady Quinn has now entered the mix.

NFL.com:
The ex-Browns, Broncos and Chiefs passer told The Dan Patrick Show on Friday that he worked out for an unnamed team on Monday.

"It went well," Quinn told the show, per Pro Football Talk. "In this particular situation, though, they need something to happen in order for me to possibly be there."

The Dan Patrick Show's Andrew Perloff later tweeted: "I'm hearing it's the Patriots."

Ryan Mallet has been clearly ahead of the struggling Garoppolo in training camp so far, but if the team can get something for him before he leaves the team, they'd have to make the deal. Perhaps Quinn is the best of the rest in terms of veteran backups left out there? Garoppolo certainly wouldn't be ready to take over the reins if he were the number 2 guy and something were to happen to Brady.

Quinn did note that something would have to happen for him to sign there. The former Charlie Weis protege is probably alluding to either a trade or an injury. Or both.

Don't think of this as anything more than the Patriots possibly updating their emergency list. If the two sides even met.
