Injury to Chris Jones biggest story of last night, latest update on the severity

Much of the talk today surrounding last night's game will revolve around Ryan Mallett, Jimmy Garoppolo and the battle for a spot behind Tom Brady.

While that's fun to talk about, the outcome of that more than likely won't have an impact on the field come September. Something else that happened last night could.

Patriots second year man, Chris Jones, who was expected to have an integral role as a depth defensive lineman this season, got rolled up by his teammate Marcus Forston last night. He stayed down on the ground before being helped off the field and into the lockerroom. He did not return, and according to a recent report, he won't return all preseason.

Mike Reiss, ESPNBoston:
New England Patriots defensive tackle Chris Jones is likely to miss the rest of the preseason with a left ankle injury suffered in Thursday night's preseason opener, according to a source. Jones is to have more tests today on the ankle, but the initial diagnosis is that the injury isn't a season-ending type of situation and that Jones dodged what could have been a more serious injury had it affected his knee.

Jones was one of the rookie defensive lineman forced into duty last season with both Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly going down. That experience had him in line for a big role on this defense. By all accounts, Jones was very impressive in training camp thus far and his importance was highlighted even more when Sealver Siliga went down in practice on Wednesday.

If the Pats are missing both for significant time, it could possibly cost either of them a roster spot, and the team will have to turn to lesser options like Marcus Forston or Joe Vellano to fill in behind Wilfork and Kelly.
