NFL slaps Ray Rice with two game suspension for knocking out his wife

According to Adam Schefter, Ray Rice will be suspended for the first two games of the upcoming NFL regular season after an incident this off-season in which he was accused of punching his wife and then dragging her through the hallway of an Atlantic City casino.

Rice was indicted in March by a grand jury on charges of third degree aggravated assault, and faces a jail sentence of 3-5 years if convicted. Despite this, Rice will be back on the field for the Ravens by their Week 3 game against the Panthers.

The penalty here certainly does not seem to match the crime. Players who violate the NFL's substance abuse policy currently face an automatic suspension of 4 games. Terrelle Pryor was suspended for five games in 2011 for his involvement in a memorabilia scandal during his time at Ohio State.

An NFL player could fail their first drug test for marijuana or Adderal and be suspended for twice as long as Ray Rice will be. There is no question Roger Goodell is setting a poor precedent here with a slap on the wrist for Rice in an instance of blatant domestic violence.
