Video: Belichick on drafting Brady's replacement "better off being early rather than late"
The Patriots draft has had many fans disappointed.
First, the Pats selected an injury prone defensive tackle in the first round. A move that at least seemed to indicate that the team was going all in with Tom Brady.
However, their move in the second round seemed to contradict that when they drafted quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Obviously, the 36 soon to be 37 year old Tom Brady is towards the end of his career. And although marginal, we've already begun to see a decline in his game. 3 or 4 years down the line, Brady won't be the quarterback of this team.
It's a situation that Belichick really seemed to recognize publicy for the first time, saying in his post-draft press conference that the organization felt it was better to address that scenario "early rather than late".
Certainly this does not mean the Patriots will be looking to get rid of Tom Brady this year or even next. However, if Garoppolo develops like the team hopes, we could easily have a QB controversy in Foxborough in a few years.
Other teams have done this before, most notably the Packers with Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre.
Regardless, many Patriots fans wanted the team to focus on the present by giving Brady more weapons to capitalize on the short window the team has left.
