Talib gets $26 million guaranteed: the most ever for a cornerback
Seems like a lot for a guy with chronic hip issues and a knack for missing the AFC Championship game. That being said, the work the Denver Broncos did on their defense today is impressive. Now it is all aboard the Darrelle Revis train as the Broncos have once again poached a critical player from New England in free agency.
But they certainly had to open their wallets to do so. According to reports, the Broncos will give Talib a 6 year deal worth $57 million, $26 million of which is guaranteed. With that total, Talib surpasses Brandon Carr ($25.5 million) for the most amount of guaranteed money ever given to a cornerback, which is shocking considering how unreliable he has been from a health standpoint throughout his career.
With marquee corners and safeties evaporating by the hour, the Patriots are left with few options to replace Talib. The only players left with a skill level comparable to Aqib are Darelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. The rumors continue to fly the Patriots will make a push to land Revis, who is reportedly going to be released by the Bucs tomorrow.
The Broncos improved their defense today, significantly, landing Talib AND TJ Ward. To add insult to injury, they are supposedly the front runners to sign Demarcus Ware. That is a tough team for anyone to contend with. It has become abundantly clear Denver is taking the "win now" mentality, recognizing the closing window of their aging Hall of Fame quarterback.
The Broncos overpaid for Talib, way more than the Patriots were ever going to pay him. But plain and simple, they made their team a lot better today. A lot better than the team responsible for beating the Patriots easily in the AFC Championship Game.
Time to step it up Bill. Logan Ryan, Kyle Arrington, and Alfonzo Dennard aren't going to cut it. Get Revis.

The reported $26 million guarantee for Talib is the highest ever for a CB, surpassing Brandon Carr's $25.5 million. Wow
