Patriots have plans to lock up Revis long term

Now for the interesting part. The deal does NOT prohibit the Patriots in any way, shape or form, from placing the franchise tag on Revis, according to Albert Breer (below). Breer also noters (below) that the Patriots have designs to lock him up long term after a "feeling out period."
Important note: Darrelle Revis' 1-year, $12 million deal w/the Patriots doesn't contain anything preventing NE from franchising him in '15.

Additionally, I'm told the Patriots ultimately, after a feeling-out period, have designs on locking up Revis long-term.

Personally, I think this is pretty smart on the part of the Patriots - you pay him for one year, see how it works, and then decide whether he's worth keeping around long term. If Revis plays the way he's capable of, which I think he'll do, then it's pretty straightforward - the Patriots work on a long term deal. Of course, if he suffers another major injury, then the Pats don't bring him back next year.
