Free Agency Recap: Fitzpatrick to Texans, Vick and DeSean to the Jets?

I didn't post a one of these yesterday due to Wednesday's lack of activity, but these posts will continue to go up whenever there's free agent action like yesterday produced. Here's your recap.

  • The Cardinals landed the last big name cornerback on the market, signing Antonio Cromartie to a one year deal. There were whispers that Cromartie could be returning to the Jets, despite being cut for cap savings in early March, but such talks couldn't have gone well judging from the parting shot that he his wife tweeted out on his Twitter account. As for the Jets, Rex Ryan maintains he's confident in his cornerbacks, but reports that Rex is somewhere between frustrated and furious over the team's failure to land either Darrelle Revis or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie say otherwise.
  • Rex may say he feels good about his cornerbacks, but reports that the Jets have joined the Patriots in inquiring about a trade for Philly WR DeSean Jackson say they're not satisfied with just adding Eric Decker at receiver this offseason. The Jets interest in Jackson could be tied to their interest in QB Mike Vick, who is visiting the Jets today and is very close with Jackson. With over $26 million in cap space (and the opportunity to save $8.3 more by cutting Mark Sanchez before 4 pm Monday), the Jets are certainly in a better position to take on Jackson's $10.5 million salary than the Patriots.
  • There's a good chance that the Bill O'Brien era will begin in Houston with Ryan Fitzpatrick under center, as the 31 year old QB signed a two year deal with the Texans. Fitzpatrick started 9 games in Tennessee last year and has started in Buffalo and Cincinnati as well. Perhaps Fitzpatrick's Harvard education appealed to O'Brien's New England roots. There, worked in the obligatory Harvard reference. Did you know he went to Harvard?
  • There was a point today where it looked like Jared Allen signing with the Seahawks was an inevitability, but the veteran DE is still on the market for now. Allen visited with the Seahawks for a second time, but has decided to mull over the decision this weekend. His agent implied that there are other teams in the mix, which is news to all covering the situation. However, it's also really dumb to trust anything an agent says around this time of year, so take his words with a Vince Wilfork-sized grain of salt. If I was a betting man, I'd have him signed in Seattle by Monday, but stay tuned...
  • Here's another big name in the news yesterday: Devin Hester. The longtime Chicago Bear, where he built his reputation as arguably the best return specialist in NFL history, signed a three year with the Falcons. The Georgia Dome might explode the first time Hester high-steps his way into the end zone in tribute to Falcons legend Neon Deion.
  • The Vikings added another DE to counter the loss of Jared Allen, signing Corey Wooton away from Chicago. Wooton's ability to play both inside and out made him one of the more sought-after defensive linemen left on the market. It also takes another name off the thinning defensive end market.
  • The Dolphins are meeting with former Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno today. Moreno, the 12th pick in the 2009 draft, at one point looked like a first round bust, but he emerged in the last two years with Peyton Manning as a versatile, reliable cog in their offense. He's a tough physical runner who can break tackles, solid in the passing game, and excellent in pass protection. Considering the Dolphins major need at running back, it would be a surprise if something doesn't get done there.
  • The Panthers finally have a receiver, signing veteran Jerricho Cotchery away from Pittsburgh. Patriots fans should breathe a sigh of relief that we won't see him again any time soon, as he's proven to be a Pats killer throughout his career.
  • The Bucs added another cornerback, signing former Cowboys first rounder Mike Jenkins. Jenkins excelled in college in a similar zone system to Lovie Smith's preferred Tampa 2.
  • Finally the 49ers kept rock-solid fullback Bruce Miller around on a three year deal.
