Breaking town Aqib Talib's monster contract

In an article posted today on BostonHerald.com, Pats beat writer Jeff Howe broke down the intricacies of Aqib Talib's contract which many labeled as ridiculously overpriced for the talented but injury prone corner.

Here is the year by year breakdown of the contract as posted by Howe:

2014:
Signing bonus: $5 million
Base salary: $4.5 million (fully guaranteed)
Roster bonus: $2 million (seventh day of league year)
Roster bonus: $500,000 ($31,250 per game)
Cap hit: $7,906,250

2015:
Base salary: $8.5 million (guaranteed for injury only at time of signing, skill, cap if on roster third day of league year)
Roster bonus: $500,000 ($31,250 per game)

2016:
Base salary: $8.5 million (guaranteed for injury only at time of signing, skill, cap if on roster third day of league year)
Roster bonus: $500,000 ($31,250 per game)

2017:
Base salary: $11 million
Cap hit: $12 million

2018:
Base salary: $11 million
Cap hit: $12 million

2019:
Base salary: $8 million
Cap hit: $8 million

Basically barring any major injury in the early stages of the contract, the player will likely receive all of his guaranteed money. However, what is indicated by the breakdown above is that the Broncos have built in protection where they can cut ties with Talib after the third year of the deal based on his performance.

So while they did fork over a good chuck of change, probably too much, for Talib, they are not locked into him for six years and $57 million. In fact it is most likely Talib will not see most of that money.
