Alterraun Verner: New England "definitely a possibility"

Recent developments in the free agent cornerback market have forced Patriots fans to worry about the legitimate possibility that Aqib Talib gets paid a lot of money to play football somewhere else next year. This news certainly suggests that the Patriots are giving that possibility serious thought as well.

Verner is widely considered one of the top cornerbacks available in free agency. All he did in 2013 was hold opposing quarterbacks to a 55.8 rating when targeting him, while flashing excellent ball skills by leading the league in passes defensed (23). He also picked off a career high five passes, forming half of an impressive cornerback duo with Devin's brother Jason McCourty.

The one distinct advantage Talib has over Verner is size. At 5'10", 187, Verner is significantly smaller than Talib, who uses his 6'1" frame and long arms to compete with even the league's biggest receivers. However, Verner's excellent ball skills help him compensate for his small size, and his combination of youth and durability could make him a better long term investment than Talib.

Considering the money will likely be comparable for both players, which is the better investment? At only 25, signing Verner will lock in his prime years, while signing the 28 year old Talib holds the risk of paying big money for a corner in his early thirties. Furthermore, Verner has yet to miss a game in his four year career. Talib has missed four in less than two years with the Patriots, been forced out of back-to-back AFC championship games with injuries, and has a particularly troubling re-occuring history of hip problems. Oh, and he also has a deserved reputation as a notorious hothead. You do the math.
