Vereen comes to Ridley's defense

Shane Vereen spoke out this week in fellow running back Stevan Ridley, who was a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, per Boston.com. Ridley, who hasn't spoken publicly since Sunday's game, declined to comment again Thursday after practice, according to Boston.com.

Here's what Vereen had to say, per Boston.com:

"Stevan is a great player, and we’re there when he needs us," said Vereen. "But he knows what he has to do, and we fully expect him to be there. As a running back group, we’re pretty close, and for that reason alone, no one’s too far down, nobody’s too high up, everybody helps each other and keeps each other going.

"Everybody goes through ups and downs, that’s part of the game, and when you’re down, you need teammates, you need friends to help bring you back up to where you should be and start playing with confidence again."

This is certainly a down period for Ridley, who had fumbled in 3 straight games before becoming a healthy scratch for Sunday's game. The other side of the coin is that Ridley leads the team with 576 yards and had a streak of 5 games with a rushing TD earlier in the year, so it's really been a tale of to Ridley's this year.

Certainly a nice gesture by Vereen, but Ridley needs to figure out what his issues are and work through them before he'll be ready to play again.
