Fantasy Fix: Week 3 Waiver Wire Free-for-All
After a Bizarro Week 2 around the NFL in which three of the top six fantasy scorers were under 50% owned, this weeks waiver wire will be a free-for-all of Ted Nugent proportions. There’s also more than a few injury concerns coming out of the week (Steven Jackson, Eddie Lacy, MJD, Ray Rice) to go along with players seeing their stock rise (Giovani Bernard, Knowshon Moreno, Eddie Royal, DeAndre Hopkins). With that being said, let’s hook up with some winners for Week 3.
Quarterback: Philip Rivers, SD: When Rivers tossed four touchdowns in Week 1 against the Texans it was considered an early season fluke. Then in Week 2 Rivers goes all Dan Fouts for 419 yards and three touchdowns. How’s this for Bizarro World: Rivers now has 65 Fantasy points through two games — 27 more than Tom Brady. In his next three games, Rivers faces the Titans, the Cowboys and the Raiders. Rivers is owned in just 42% of leagues and is electric right now, plug him in.
Running Back: Bernard Pierce, BAL: Last week Pierce put up 57 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and is under 50% owned in most leagues. Pierce will get the rock in Week 3 with Ray Rice questionable this week with a hip problem. *Please note a “hip problem” is not forgetting your Arcade Fire tickets in your Brooklyn loft*
Wide Receiver: Eddie Royal, SD: Royal caught seven passes for 90 yards with three touchdowns last week and is owned in just 19% of leagues. Expect that to go way up this week. Royal’s run may be coming to end, but he’s hard not to pick him up even to just stash on the bench so your opponent can’t get him. That’s called shooting dirty pool. Ethics and Fantasy Football don’t mix.
Tight End: Charles Clay, MIA: Through two games, the 2% owned Clay has 13 targets for 10 catches, 163 yards and a rushing touchdown. If you’re still waiting around for Gronk to return Clay is worth a play this week against the Falcons. If you’re still waiting around for Aaron Hernandez you could always bake him a cake with a file in it. Just an idea.
Defense/Special Teams: Buffalo Bills at NY Jets: The Bills D is legit. They are second in the league in total defense, sixth against the pass and fourth against the run. Buffalo held Tom Brady to less than 200 yards passing and shut down Doug Martin for just 65 yards on the ground. The just 7% owned Buffalo D gets the lowly Jets who can’t run and have a rookie QB this week. Add Buffalo and buy me some wings later.
Kicker: Garrett Hartley, NO: Really, we have to talk about kickers? I stream guys on high scoring teams that play in domes. I also have an unhealthy antipathy towards kickers.
