Fantasy Fix: Top 10 Defenses

With the NFL preseason underway and fantasy drafts beginning to take place, let’s continue talking draft strategy and positional rankings.

Not a lot of strategy goes into drafting defense, so we will keep it short. Draft your defense in the next to last round. Goodnight everyone, drive carefully.

But wait, Guru, aren't there some Fantasy Footballer's that say to draft the top ranked, high scoring defense earlier?

Yes, that is true Voice of Discerning Drafter. But, those people also consider Taco Bell "eating out".

Think of it this way. The first defense taken off the board in 12-team Yahoo Standard Leagues last season was the Seattle Seahawks. Their average draft position was the middle of the eighth round and they scored 186 points. The defense drafted in the eleventh round, the Denver Broncos, they scored 184 points. Know what player was missed by those 'Hawk lovin' defensive drafters in the eighth round? Doug Martin. He scored 262 points.

It's always better to take a chance on an upside position player. You can wait on defense, or better yet, stream the best matchup each week. That's how the suave fantasy pro's do it. *blows on knuckles, rubs knuckles on shirt, spills drink in lap*

Here are the Top 10 Defenses for the 2013 Fantasy Football Season.

1. Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks allowed the fewest points in football last year and were top 10 in interceptions and fumble recoveries. That's great for real football, not such a big thing in fake football. Let someone else make the mistake of drafting them in the sixth round.

2. San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers are a Super Bowl caliber defense and someone will draft them way too early while wearing their Joe Montana jersey. I will not be that person. I'm wearing my Steve DeBerg jersey.

3. Denver Broncos: The Broncos were top five in points allowed, top three in defensive touchdowns and No. 1 in sacks last season. So much for drafting them in the last round his year.

4. Chicago Bears: Da Bears scored 10 defensive touchdowns last season. Only two other defenses scored more than five. If you can get them late, grab them. If you can't, watch this and enjoy.

5. Houston Texans: J.J. Watt. That is all.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals were a top 5 fantasy D last season. They are one to target. They are also fun to watch on Hard Knocks. Is James Harrison really that freakin' crazy?

7. New England Patriots: Snag them with your next to last pick then form a prayer circle for Tom Brady's knee.

8. Baltimore Ravens: No Ray Lewis, no Ed Reed, no problem. Really.

9. St. Louis Rams: The Rams were tied with the Texans in sacks last season and scored 151 fantasy points. They are like the geeky Dungeon and Dragons playing kid you sat next to in homeroom in 1986. Easy target. Wait, that was me.

10. Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals were second in the league last year in interceptions. Unfortunately, most of those came against their own team.
