Blount Experienced in Hurry-Up Offense
At 6'0" and 250 pounds, running back LaGarrette Blount is built more for power than speed. However, Blount's previous experience in a hurry-up system should help the fourth-year veteran get acclimated to New England's torrid offensive pace.
"My experience with Oregon helps me a lot with that [adjusting to the Patriots]. Being in this position, it's kind of tough just learning the offense. But, like I said, my experience with Oregon helps a little bit with that."Blount is referring to his brief time playing for current Eagles coach Chip Kelly at Oregon. Blount only played in three games that 2009 season, as he was suspended two months for, um, losing his cool a little bit following an embarrassing season opening loss to Boise State. However, Blount did practice with the team during his suspension, giving him an opportunity to get acclimated to Kelly's groundbreaking fast break offense, and he did play well when he finally got a chance to return to the field late that season.
Of course, Blount will get his first chance to impress in game action against Kelly's Eagles August 9th. The Pats will have two joint practices with Kelly's Eagles leading up to that game as well.
Blount will need whatever leg up he can get to win a job in New England's crowded backfield. Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen are locks to make the roster, with newcomer Leon Washington appearing safe too due to his value as a top kick returner. If the Patriots elect once again to only carry four running backs, Blount and second year man Brandon Bolden could be battling for one roster spot.
With a 1,000 yard season in 2010 under his belt, Blount is the more professionally accomplished of the two runners, but Bolden is younger and brings additional value on special teams. Blount might have to really impress, particularly as a goal line option, to overcome Bolden's versatility. Working against Bolden is his reputation for being somewhat injury prone. Bolden has missed the team's past two practices, leaving more reps available for Blount to impress the coaching staff. Despite the fierce competition, Blount says the team's running backs get along well off the field.
"They're a very close-knit group, but they welcomed me and I fit in well with them. They brought me right in, so I'm pretty comfortable with them now."
