Tebow signing further evidence McDaniels is Pats next coach

It began when the Patriots brought Josh McDaniels back on-board after his stint as the head coach of the Denver Broncos and OC of Rams. Since rejoining Bill Belichick on the sideline in Foxborough, McDaniels influence over the team has steadily increased.

He was largely responsible for the signings of Greg Salas, Brandon Lloyd, and Danny Amendola; three players he worked closely with during his time in St. Louis . And he undoubtedly played a significant role in today's signing of polarizing quarterback Tim Tebow, who he selected with the 25th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft as head coach of the Broncos.

Bill Belichick acts as not only the coach of the team, but the GM as well. He has almost complete control over personnel decisions. The fact that McDaniels now appears to be swaying such decisions is a strong indiciation that he will succeed Belichick when his time is done with the Patriots.

McDaniels publically stated he was not interested in head coaching vacancies this off-season, further evidence that he is content to remain in New England. Likely, he knows that soon enough he will take the reigns of one of the most successful football regimes of all time.

And beyond the player signings, McDaniels impact on the team is enormous. He is the brains behind the "McOffense," leading a unit that consistently ends the season atop the league in all offensive statistics. McDaniels is known to throw unique looks and wrinkles at opponents, and it will be interesting to see if he develops packages around Tebow.

It doesn't make sense for Tebow to join the team solely as a QB. And it doesn't make sense to bring Tom Brady off the field to let Tebow run plays under center. Brady is one of, if not the, best quarterbacks in the league, and for how slow of a runner he is, he is actually fantastic in short yardage situations.

It makes more sense for Tebow and Brady to be on the field at the same time, with Tebow in the backfield or split out in a receiving/blocking role as a tight end or fullback. He could also be a contributor on special teams, an area of the game that both Belichick and McDaniels place tremendous value and focus.

It was reported today that this decision came from discussions at the "highest level of the organization." And there is no doubt in my mind that McDaniels led the charge in support of the player he once saw enough talent and potential in to draft him in the first round.

And this is yet another indicator that when Bill is no longer manning the headset on the Patriots sideline, Josh McDaniels will be.
