Adrian Wilson released in Arizona, Patriots might make sense

Adrian Wilson has been one of the stars of the Arizona Cardinals secondary, but now it seems his time has come to an end in the south west. With safety being a key need for the Patriots in this off-season, obviously this news widens the eyes of Patriots fans.

You can add Wilson to the growing list of veteran safety targets that includes names such as Ed Reed and Charles Woodson. A boost at that position could help bolster a unit that's been one of the poorest in the league for at least three years now.

In some ways, Wilson might fit more than safety Ed Reed in New England. Wilson plays the strong safety position, which would better compliment Devin McCourty who took over as a free safety this past season (Ed Reed also plays free safety).

Of course, Wilson's no Ed Reed, and he's been released for a reason. His play started to decline after 12 years in a Cardinals uniform. According to NFL.com he was pulled off in nickel sets this season. Which essentially means, when they thought the other team was going to pass, they took Wilson off the field.

Still, the Cardinals have a roster in their secondary that would make Patriots fans jealous. With guys like Patrick Peterson and Greg Toler back there in the secondary, it's clear the Cardinals know how to draft defensive backs. Point being, just because Wilson isn't good enough for the Cardinals anymore, doesn't necessarily mean he won't be good enough for the Patriots.

What the Pats need in this writer's opinion is a proven veteran who can be offer something as much cerebral as physical. A vet like Wilson - a pro-bowler and all-pro safety- could definitely bring that.

This could come down to how much the Patriots believe Wilson has left in the tank an, as per usual though, how much money he's looking for.
