Former Patriot Ty Warren Still Holds Massachusetts Fishing Record
That right there is the Vince Wilfork of fish.
This 62-pound mahi-mahi caught by former New England Patriots defensive end Ty Warren back in 2009 remains the record for largest of that type of fish ever snagged in the great state of Massachusetts. The Boston Globe had a tidbit about the massive lunker back when it happened that explains some of the story behind the record.
According to Hairball Charters captain Eric Stapelfeld - who took this picture and helped Warren snag the fish - the state record for a mahi-mahi (was) 47 pounds. Warren and Stapelfeld, who met through their mutual friend Matt Light, caught the big fish during a Saturday boat trip around the Canyons off Martha’s Vineyard. “It’s way beyond catching a good fish,’’ Stapelfeld explained, proudly. “The odds of catching it are one in millions.’’
I don't know how this got past me before, unless I knew all about it and just forgot it over these past couple years, but this is a pretty remarkable accomplishment. I just wonder how jealous Matt Light must be that he wasn't there on that historic day when his two buddies set a fishing record together without him.
Warren and Stapelfeld, however, can't say they will be honored at halftime of Monday's bout with the Houston Texans like Matt Light can.
