Alex Silvestro Switching to Tight End

As if the Patriots didn't have enough tight ends, defensive end Alex Silvestro now finds himself on the offensive side of the ball.

"I was like, ‘Really? OK, sure.’ I didn’t really expect it, so when it happened I was like, ‘Yeah, why not?’ "

The Patriots headliners at the tight end position are Rob Gronk and Aaron Hernandez, and they have added veterans Daniel Fells, Jake Ballard, Visanthe Shiancoe, and rookie Tyler Urban. So the chances of him getting in the lineup as a tight end are very small.

"In college I only played defense," said Silvestro, who signed with the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Rutgers last summer. "The last time I played anything besides defense was high school. I came from a small school and played anything I could — offense, defense, special teams, I even punted.

Aside from the little offense he played in high school, he has a tough climb up the depth chart. When I first saw this headline I thought it would have been for a practice or a short time if there was a shortage of TE's. Nope. Silvestro sported #69 last season but his number has changed for eligibilty reasons to #49.

In the preseason opener Alex struggled with blocking and did not record a catch but was thrown to twice.
