Patriots in talks to give Rob Gronkowski extension

The Patriots are in serious negotiations regarding the contract of tight end Rob Gronkowski, a league source confirms, but nothing is finalized. It is unclear at this time whether the two sides are discussing just a restructuring of the current contract or an extension as well.
Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com reported the deal will give Gronkowski a raise and an extension.

A second-round draft pick in 2010, Gronkowski has two years remaining on his four-year rookie deal, which pays him base salaries of $540,000 in 2012 and $575,000 in '13, plus minimal workout bonuses.

Really, this makes all the sense in the world. Gronk is maybe the best tight end in the league and other than Brady, he might be the most valuable player on the offense.

However, Wes Welker has to be sitting there thinking, what about me? Yet if the Patriots lock Gronkowski up this could open the door for Welker. Really the only problem with signing Welker long term is because both Gronkowski and Hernandez will soon be free agents. If they already have Gronk's deal in place, that might give them a better idea of what they can give to Welker to keep all three.
