Matt Light talks Patriots defense

Boston Herald:
The hosts then discussed the Patriots’ highly publicized defense, and Light specifically credited Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo and Patrick Chung as “the heart and soul” of the unit. Light said last year’s defensive group was also “in a bit of a rebuilding phase” before elaborating on three areas of need.

“What I do think they need is a little more to go around them,” Light said. “They need that young guy to go in on third down and get them off the field.”

Of course, the Patriots drafted defensive ends Chandler Jones and Jake Bequette, and linebacker Dont’a Hightower, so that young playmaker might already be on the roster.

Light also mentioned a need for more depth in the secondary.

The Patriots defense ranked near dead last in the league last year, struggling mightily against the pass. As Light points out, the defense has been in a rebuilding phase the past couple of years. Key players of the Super Bowl winning days like Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi or Richard Seymour all moved on in trades or retired by 2009.

Still, I think most teams would like to only lose 5 regular season games the past two years and make a Super Bowl appearance all while rebuilding their defense.
